Dental restorations are important for treating damaged or decayed teeth. These treatments help us to protect teeth that have suffered serious issues, restoring their health and their normal functions. A common restoration for teeth affected by more significant damage is a crown. While effective, the fact that crowns typically take two appointments can be problematic. At Monroe Smiles, we can provide ceramic crowns in just one appointment with CEREC.

The Issue with Two Appointments

The standard crown procedure requires two separate appointments. While it might not seem like all that big of a deal, there are some significant disadvantages to this. One of the biggest drawbacks is the fact that you have to wear a temporary crown. This crown is meant to protect the tooth until your actual crown is done. However, it may not always be effective. It can come loose or fall out. When this happens, the prepared tooth is at risk for damage and bacterial invasion.

Another significant drawback is the fact that you need to schedule two different appointments. Your schedule is already busy enough. Having to schedule two appointments can interfere with your normal life. Moreover, if the crown needs to go back to the lab, you will need to schedule yet another appointment.

How Getting a CEREC Crown Works

CEREC technology streamlines the dental crown procedure into a single visit by utilizing advanced digital tools.

1.	Initially, the dentist prepares the damaged tooth by removing a minimal amount of enamel to ensure a proper fit for the crown.
2.	Next, a handheld intraoral scanner captures a precise digital image of the patient's teeth and gums, creating a detailed 3D model on the computer.
3.	This model allows for the design of an accurate dental restoration with greater precision than traditional impressions.
4.	Once the design is finalized, the data is sent to an in-house milling unit, which fabricates the crown from a ceramic block. The newly milled crown is then polished, fitted, and, if necessary, adjusted before being securely bonded to the prepared tooth.

This efficient process eliminates the need for temporary crowns and multiple dental visits, offering a convenient solution for patients seeking prompt dental restorations.

What Else Can CEREC Do?

While CEREC is most frequently used to make ceramic crowns, it can also be used to create other restorations such as bridges, crowns for dental implants, inlays, onlays, and more. CEREC can only be used to make ceramic restorations in a single appointment. Metal restorations will still require two appointments.
