Tooth Extraction No one likes to consider having a permanent tooth pulled, but in some cases, it may be the only way to properly maintain the patient's oral health. If one tooth is diseased and decaying, if left in place it can infect other teeth and the decay or disease can easily spread. A tooth extraction, which is professionally known as exodontia, is one of the most frequently performed procedures in dental health today. Our office will always look at alternatives before recommending an extraction. It is always preferable to save the tooth whenever possible because once a tooth is removed there are other concerns that need to be addressed. What are the Different Types of Extractions? There are multiple types of extractions. It sometimes depends on the tooth that is in need of extraction or on the patient's oral health that dictates which one is preferable. Whichever procedure is chosen, they all involve removing the tooth through the gentle motion from the gum tissue. A simple extraction is the most basic and most widely used. It employs a numbing solution which is applied to both the gum and tooth prior to extraction. This is done so the patient does not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure. It is very important the patient be relaxed during the surgery, so they do not flinch or react and possibly damage other areas of their mouth while the procedure is occurring. Once numbed, specialized tools are used to remove the tooth from the supportive gum structure. The surgical extraction is infinitely more involved and is typically used when the teeth in need of extraction have become impacted. This means they have not erupted through the gums in an appropriate manner and remain buried in the jawbone. In the most severe cases, the tooth has to be broken apart into multiple pieces in order to be removed. Surgical extractions should be performed by an oral surgeon.
